Number Of March Madness Brackets Could Increase With Sports Betting Legalization

March Madness is coming soon and along with that comes several million dollars in betting money for the tournament. Last year the American Gaming Association (AGA), said that Americans bet an estimated $10 billion a year on March Madness games. This number could increase this year with a potential roughly 20 states thinking about legalizing sports betting in the next few months.

More States Make Sports Betting Legal

There are currently eight states with legal sports betting. Nevada being the longest standing one. New Jersey and Delaware along with Mississippi and West Virginia are some of the recent state to legalize sports betting. New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island complete the current list of legal sports betting states as of now.

New York is on the cusp of legalizing sports betting. New York nearly had sport betting legalized last year but the legislation failed. The state has had recent problems with their daily fantasy sports law, a ruling that Acting Supreme Court Justice Gerald W. Connolly said violated the state’s constitution.

“The judge’s decision was unequivocal,” said Cornelius D. Murray.

Arkansas is another state that could be legalizing sports betting soon. Last year local voters approved a constitutional amendment that will, among other things, bring sports betting to four counties in the state. The amendment includes accepting wagers on sporting events.

Why March Madness Brackets May Increase

Aside from Nevada the seven other legalized states predominantly require the bettor to place their sports wagers in person at the casino instead of through office pools and the like. Nonetheless, this means more people can readily gamble on the NCAA tournament legally and without negative consequences. Legal betting in office pools and tournament brackets means the gambler has no need to hide and can enjoy the experience without constantly looking over their shoulder.

The American Gaming Association (AGA) claims that sports betting legalization will make 28 million Americans more likely to pparticipate in legal US gambling. The over 20 states considering sports gambling may add-on to this 28 million number as well.
