LAS VEGAS – Over the years, many casino workers and casino players have gotten sick due to second-hand smoke.

In Nevada, there are still many casinos that allow for smoking to take place on the casino floor. There is no definitive proof that people who smoke tend to enjoy gambling more. Nevertheless, many casinos in Las Vegas caters to smokers by allowing them to smoke and gamble.

This has harmful effects on people who do not smoke. The US Surgeon General has stated that no amount of exposure to smoke is considered to be safe. For casino workers, there is no escaping from second-hand smoke.

In Las Vegas, Teresa Price has been working in a casino for 35 years. Although she says she enjoys the job, she told the Associated Press that the second-hand smoke has caused her many health problems. Price has been diagnosed with heart disease and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. These two diseases are directly linked with smoking or being exposed to second-hand smoke.

Casino associations in Las Vegas insist that they have ventilation systems that help remove second-hand smoke. But experts from the Centers for Disease Control, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers say no such system exists.

“The particle size of the constituents of smoke are so small that these air filters don’t do a thing. They might knock it down 10% or so, but that does not stop the harmful effects,” said Chris Pritsos, director of the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station at the University of Nevada.

The Rise Of Online

As previously mentioned, no amount of second-hand smoke exposure is safe. So, what is the solution for gamblers that do not want to be exposed to smoke?

Lately, there has been a rise in online casinos around the country. New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delaware all have legalized online casinos. Several other states are also considering legalizing these types of gambling platforms as well. These casinos are starting to provide an alternative to going to a brick and motor casino.

Over the past few years, more legal gambling sites have been appearing online. To add to that, most public buildings in Las Vegas and around the country have banned smoking. With the internet becoming another option, more people may be heading towards online casinos to get away from second-hand smoke.
