Klay Thompson Notes His Love And Disdain For Playing Poker

Klay Thompson
  • Klay Thompson and the Golden State Warriors are known for using poker as a team-building method.
  • As a rookie, Thompson was unable to keep up with the heavy bets of the veterans but still played.
  • Other NBA stars have played their hands of poker between World Series of Poker Events and charity tournaments.

OAKLAND, Calif. – Klay Thompson is known for his excellent three-point shooting and team-minded strategy but many are unaware that Thompson also loves playing poker.

On Tuesday, the all-star guard spoke financial wisdom with Maverick Carter on the most recent episode of Kneading Dough. During the conversation, Thompson expressed how playing poker was one of the most difficult situations he encountered as a rookie.

“We had some sharks on the team,” said Thompson. “Every road trip on the plane. It’s a great way to build camaraderie, but it’s tough to do on your rookie deal.”

The Golden State Warriors have a strong history of using poker as a way of building the team chemistry, as evident from former players such as David Lee, Andre Bogut, and even Steph Curry having interest in the game.

Thompson claims he loves playing cards and that he got much better at the game as he played with the team often.

“If I had to buy in more than once then… and I had to tell my financial advisor what happened, then it’s not good,” said Thompson. “It’s like going to the principal’s office.

NBA Stars Who Love Poker

The NBA is well known for having members gamble on poker as players often express their desire to play and even participate in celebrity poker tournaments from time to time.

Shawn Marion is so in love with the game that he even hosts celebrity charity poker matches in connection with his foundation.

Paul Pierce entered the World Series of Poker in 2014 and actually fared rather well. Making it to the third day of the event, Pierce continues to play even after his playing days.

One player who took a major leap into poker was none other than Tony Parker. The French guard even signed a partnership deal in 2010 with Betclic – an online French poker site.

But none of the aforementioned athletes have been as involved as Earl Barron. The seven-footer who won a championship with the Miami Heat and coaches at Northern Arizona has also played in many WSOP events. His total winnings after recouping his buy-in costs is over $10,000 in the eight events he has participated in.

Thompson may not be on the level on Barron but the fact remains, he is an avid poker player. Perhaps one day the NBA superstar will find himself on the World Series of Poker tour going all-in on 3s.
