LAS VEGAS — With all commercial casinos closed in Las Vegas, a safety plan for when they reopen is starting to be tested. Screaming Images are preparing a protective shield to place in casinos in order to prevent spreading germs.

Protective Shields

Screaming Images, a company that is based out of Las Vegas, has started to come together to produce safety shields that could be used at casinos to help separate people playing at slot machines and table games. The shields will be made out of a clear acrylic so and will be made to fit different legal gambling games.

“It’s us trying to take care of our existing customers—It’s also us trying to keep busy (during the shutdown) and come up with innovative ideas and introduce them to the properties. It’s basically a team effort between everyone in the city,” said James Swanson, Screaming Images principal.

The clear acrylic, when installed is not expected to fog up and is also easy to clean which is expected to be done on a regular basis. Swanson also mentioned that the installation of the product was simple depending on where it was being installed and that it does not use any screws to attach it to a slot machine or table.

Being that the coronavirus closures are considered temporary, the company is making sure that these protective shields are going to be recyclable.

“The biggest thing for us is it is recyclable—We’re going to have a program put together to make sure it’s not just thrown away in the trash can,” said Swanson.

Testing

Screaming Images is currently testing these shields at the facilities of the El Cortez Resort and Casino in downtown Las Vegas.

“When he reached out about this new technology, and with everything being such an unknown to us and the industry, any new idea that could potentially work to protect employees and customers we’re willing to take a look at,” said Adam Wiesberg, the General Manager of El Cortez.

The feedback that the company had received from those who have seen the shields have been positive. Swanson mentioned that some companies are reaching out to Screaming Images to get orders in place.

The shields could be used in other places as well such as restaurants and other crowded businesses that want to follow social distancing guidelines.

Aside from the protective shield, plans for reopening after the casino closures are starting to be thought of. To keep with the theme of social distancing, it is said that three players would be allowed to sit at a table at a time as well as having every other slot machine turned off.
